With colocation you usually own or control the servers, network equipment, and licenses yourself. It suits environments where specific hardware, compliance, or existing investments make rented capacity less suitable.
At the same time, you remove the dependency on an internal server room with limited redundancy.
Move the operating environment, not ownership
The data center partner provides physical environment, redundant power, cooling, connectivity, and access routines. You still need to plan backup, monitoring, patching, and responsibility.
That makes colocation a middle path between self-hosting and fully rented infrastructure.
Calculate the whole picture
Do not compare only rack cost. Include power, network, remote hands, travel time, spare parts, insurance, redundancy, and the risk of operating in rooms not built for it.
When the full picture is included, colocation often becomes clearer than continuing to expand an internal server room.
